All the latest new iPod Touch rumours
It's fair to say that the iPhone-makers have endured an eventful few months. Antennagate still continues to take a little gloss off the launch of the iPhone 4, as Apple tries to swiftly sweep the whole embarrassing escapade under the carpet once and for all.
So how can the Cupertino company make it up to those disgruntled by recent events? Well, talk has intensified that Apple is preparing to update its iPod range, with the Touch set to get a major hardware revamp.
Surveying what has already leaked into cyberspace about a new addition to the Apple PMP family, see below for our run-down of rumours about the new iPod Touch.
1. iPhone OS 3.2 reveals new iPod Touch
Back in April of this year just when the iPad was first hitting the shops, Boy Genius Report noticed that the accompanying OS made reference to new models of the iPod, iPhone and iPad. While this may not come as a big surprise seeing as Apple tends to refresh its lineup on a regular basis these days, it was still enough to get those fanbois speculating what Apple had lined up next.
2. New iPod Touch specs
UK retailer John Lewis let more than the cat out of the bag revealing not only that an iPod Touch refresh was on the cards, but that they had an idea of the specs which they said were based “noises we’re hearing from suppliers”
At an event to show off its Christmas range, the retailer claimed that there would be a 5-megapixel camera with Flash, HD video, an accelerometer, gryroscope and a front-facing camera to deliver FaceTime video calling.
3. It's FaceTime!
Apple has been lauding the arrival of its Skype-style app when it was introduced with the iPhone 4, and the Wi-Fi enabled feature may well be ported to its PMP compatriot. New iPod Touch pictures appear to show room for a FaceTime camera, and while the feature currently only works between iPhone 4 handsets, this would go some way to convincing consumers that it really is a must-have feature.
4. iPod Touch camera: 5MP or 3.2MP?
Having finally added a camera that brings the iPhone 4 a little closer to its smartphone rivals, a 5-megapixel camera is also rumoured to be heading to the new Touch. Contrary to those initial reports, insiders told 9to5mac that the camera on the iPod Touch will in fact only be 3.2 megapixels, with ‘similar characteristics’ to that found on the iPhone 3GS. That also suggests there won’t be an LED flash either.
These supposed iPod Touch pictures show a device that passes a close resemblance to the iPhone 4, but also with a dedicated slot up top for a front-facing camera, which would also support talk of Facetime arriving on the Touch.
5. Case for new iPod Touch?
According to HardMac, a reliable source who helped identify that the iPod Nano was getting a camera, claimed that case specifications for the new iPod Touch have already been sent out to manufacturers. The iPod Touch case pictures appear to show a camera and flash which fuelling camera capability for the Touch s in the offing.
6. iPod Touch 2010 release date
Steve Jobs tends to save his iPod-related announcements for an event held in September which is supported by BMO Capital analyst Keith Bachman. There has however, been some talk that the new iPod Touch could be revealed much sooner. A “reliable source within Apple” told MacMagazine the new iPod range will arrive before August 16th. We're putting our money on Apple sticking to its usual September slot.
